Large Hadron Collider

a large, extremely high-energy particle accelerator built by CERN in an underground location at the French-Swiss border near Geneva for the purpose of colliding two counter-rotating beams of protons as a means of testing current theories underlying particle physics; activated in 2008; in 2012–13 used to validate the existence of the Higgs boson. Abbrev.: LHC
